Snow day memories

Like most of the country (or so Instagram seems to be telling me), we got snow last weekend! The timing was perfect, because my brother came to visit the Wednesday before and it snowed Thursday night, meaning we got a good mix of Oklahoma winter and exciting snow days.

As our first guest in town, we took him to a few Altus classics to eat (namely Braum’s and Taqueria Hernandez) and showed him around base. Best of all, hosting him prompted us to be tourists in our own town!

The arrival of snow flipped our plans around a bit in all the good ways. I’m secretly a four year old and love snow. We’d gotten a few flakes earlier in December but nothing that covered the ground, so I was really pumped to have a blanket!

I’m a big believer in getting outside. I must go wander around out there for a while the snow is still falling, and I will drag whomever happens to be nearby along with me. Sorry not sorry if you ever get snowed in with me. It was quiet and peaceful and perfect, just like a snowy walk should be. Other than flakes landing, the only movement we saw was rabbits darting away out of their holes to escape our invasion.

Here’s the thing, though. We may not get much snow in southwest Oklahoma, but we do get low temps. It stayed below freezing for three days which is a new experience for this southern girl. That being said, the temperature pales in comparison to the wind! We seem to consistently have a wind chill that knocks things down another ten degrees or so, and walking outside is no simple task. Confession: before moving out here, I thought of scarves primarily as a fashion accessory. Yes, they kept you warm, but no big deal if you forgot one. Now I understand they’re a vital part of not freezing your face off while walking anywhere in the cold.

Finally got a few shots of the hares! There’s another under the tree.

After the first day of snowfall sun returned, making the sun sparkle against the bright blue sky. This time we opted for a snow day breakfast, which requires buttermilk pancakes and bacon of course. Our walk took us to the commissary to stock up – luckily, Oklahoma doesn’t seem react quite as intensely as good old North Carolina. Meaning the store still had a few dozen eggs in stock.  Also, big thank you to the guy who offered us a ride home (he’d passed us walking in the neighborhood) and couldn’t wrap his mind around the fact that we (read:I) genuinely wanted to walk home. It’s not like the buttermilk would go bad in this weather.

See the tiny bunnies at the base? They live in there!

After our snowy explorations, we’d head inside for hot chocolate, tea, and movies. Can you ask for a better weekend?

We also did some hiking in the Wichita Mountains, which you can find here. Check back in a bit for more of those!

What’s your ideal snow day? Did you get snow last weekend?
