Exploring the Bishop Arts District: Dallas, Texas

Recently Logan and I snuck off to Dallas. He had just finished a major work thing and I couldn’t stand letting a three day weekend go to waste. So we threw some stuff in the car and headed to a fun neighborhood called Bishop Arts District.

Dallas sits less than four hours from us, but somehow we hadn’t spent any real time exploring the city! Only buzzing in and out through the airport. It was high time to change that.

Since it’s so close, we opted to focus our time on one particular neighborhood rather than see all of Dallas & Fort Worth in one trip. All the more reason to plan future trips back, right???

We stayed in an Airbnb about a 15 minute walk from the center of Bishop Arts District. It was close enough that we didn’t have to bother with the car, but far enough that we ubered at night.

The place is idyllic. It’s what you picture as the downtown of a small town: people walking everywhere, trees line the street, and storefronts are cute and colorful. Shop owners talk to you and waiters will give you their honest opinions on the menu. On a weekend it’s bustling but not hectic.

As you might guess by having “Arts” in the name, this place is hipster paradise. Great restaurants serve locally sourced food. Antique shops are dotted amongst record stores, cigar stores, barbershops that serve whiskey. Hats and mustaches abound. Murals and art on everything that holds still. It’s a great spot to grab a coffee and people watch.

Our main attraction: food! As usual. I wrote a whole post on the food in Bishop Arts, so go head over there if you’re planning your trip. That being said, there are two other food-related attractions that didn’t make it into my restaurant post that you should at least stick your head into:

Emporium Pies has absurdly delicious pies. They always have four or five on rotation with cute names and cool flavors. This visit we went with Lord of Pies, a deep dish apple pie with cinnamon streusel and a hint of caramel. It was quite possibly the best apple pie I’ve ever had. Streusel for the win!

Another great spot is Dude, Sweet Chocolate. It’s a fine chocolate shop with none of the pretension. Best of all, they’re generous with samples and love to tell you about the different flavor combinations! The flavors were original and decidedly not what you’d expect from a traditional chocolate shop, like bleu cheese or garbanzo beans. Best of all, everything is dark chocolate.  We ended up going home with a box of When Pigs Fly fudge, made with whiskey and maple syrup.

If you’re planning a getaway and want city amenities without the city itself, try the  Bishop Arts District! It’s perfect for an afternoon exploring galleries, shopping, or just walking the neighborhood. We loved it and will definitely head back soon.
