Explore Oklahoma

Since we know we’re only living here for a few years, my husband and I want to make sure we explore Oklahoma!

Military friends tell me all the time that the moving every few years is both one of the best and hardest parts of serving. JAGs typically stay in one place for two or three years, which means we’re halfway through our time here in Altus! Living in such a small town has its ups and downs, and one of the ways I cope best is by trying to find ways to enjoy what the region has to offer.

My husband and I talk a lot about how we want to take advantage of living in a new part of the country, to do and see all that Oklahoma and the surrounding areas has to offer.

I got most of my info from word of mouth, but I also reached out to Oklahoma Tourism, the state’s tourism board. Many states will send you tons of free resources for the best food, camping, hiking, hotels, local cultural events or just about any other topic you can think of! Please note: this isn’t an ad. I’m not being paid for this, it’s just a great resource anytime you move to a new area and want to know what there is to do!

You know my obsession with bucket lists, so think of this as an Oklahoma/Great Plains bucket list!

In typical me process, some of the places I just list as locations worth exploring. Others hold a specific draw, mostly hiking or food related. As we plan trips to each place, I’ll do more research for what things and events are don’t miss!

This list isn’t nearly complete, though. What else do we need to see in Oklahoma and the surrounding areas?? I’d love to hear from you – comment below to help me out!

  1. I’m so close to Oklahoma (Nebraska), but have never been! I’m looking forward to playing ya’ll in football again in a few years – I’ve missed that rivalry!

    1. I’ve only driven through Nebraska! It’s funny how we don’t always see the surrounding states of where we live. It’s on my bucket list to visit every state though – someday!

  2. When you make the trip to Palo Duro Canyon, I highly recommend dinner at the Big Texan in Amarillo. The people watching alone is worth the trip, but if you need further convincing the prairie oysters are delicious!
