Photoshoot: Mary Lynn’s Music

While I do a lot of creating with gold foil, I also do custom work that branches a little beyond what usually shows up in my Etsy shop. Today, I want to share with you one of the projects I worked on this past spring with musician Mary Lynn van Deventer!

Mary Lynn is a fantastic music teacher as well as performer: in fact, she’s one of the most respected hammered dulcimer players in the U.S.! She’s also a dear friend and former music teacher of mine, so when she reached out needing some updated marketing materials, I was overjoyed to see what we could do together!

Mary Lynn travels most weekends to perform hammered dulcimer across the country, but her passion is most obvious whenever she talks about teaching. She genuinely enjoys the music and has a deep love of passing that joy onto her students.

I was already spending some time in North Carolina this past spring, so I was excited to do a photo shoot with Mary Lynn and her instruments!

I took flute lessons from her way back in the day so I can personally vouch for her teaching skills: she’s gentle, kind, and patient. I came into music lessons unsure even of which instrument I wanted to play, and she walked me through the seven or so she plays (I wasn’t kidding when I said she has mad skills). Patiently she let me try them all out before giving me a few thoughts about what she though I had some aptitude for, then let me choose. I went with flute and really enjoyed learning under her leadership, so if you’re thinking about taking music lessons I highly recommend her!

Nowadays she’s focusing on teaching hammered dulcimer, french horn, and piano. She teaches all ages and skill levels, and will do it in-person or through FaceTime, so you don’t even have to be located near Hillsborough, North Carolina to take lessons!

During our shoot, I learned that I absolutely love photographing instruments! There’s a gorgeous artistry in the shape of instruments, and it was so much fun to capture different angles and aspects of them.

Beyond photos, she also needed a few marketing materials: fliers to publicize, letterhead for official performance correspondence, and notepaper for students to remember what to practice.
