Thinking about going to the Vienna Christmas markets?

Here are a few of the logistical questions you need to know to plan the best trip:

Give yourself two days (at least) to see them. I don’t get the appeal of rushing through them in one day, but really, what’s the point?

The ice rink is the best I’ve seen at a Christmas market ever! Definitely worth renting a pair of skates!

The major markets get NUTS on the weekends, so be prepared for crowds. But I’ve listed a few that are quieter and more local, even on a Saturday night!

Zagreb markets are fantastic! With great decor and plenty of delicious food, it’s an easy market to love.

Opening night included ceremonial lighting of the Advent decorations, an ice skating performance, and plenty of fresh snow!

What you REALLY need to know about the Vienna Christmas markets:

Vienna does great decorations and lights as well as their markets. That means wandering the city at night is so festive, even if you’re not only inside the markets.

I will say that Vienna markets get crowded on the weekends, so know that you’ll be wandering with a few thousand of your closest friends. Be patient.

My favorite savory food at the Vienna Christmas markets? Käsekrainer! It’s a sausage made with bits of cheese inside! At the markets it’s served in a hollowed out roll, and the molten cheese inside the grilled sausage was so good we ate it multiple meals!

Favorite sweet is almost always a chimney cake: these central European desserts are SO irresistible! They’re typically dusted with cinnamon, but you can get it with chocolate, fruit, Nutella, and more!

Finishing up an unforgettable long weekend at the Vienna Christmas markets!

If you’re headed there soon, here are the best markets to prioritize:
- Most magical: Rathaus and Schloss Schönbrunn
- Least crowded: University of Vienna
- Most local feel: Spittelberg and Freyngplatz
- Best food: Am Hof
- Best lights: Kohlmarkt

Viennese Christmas markets were great! Plenty of great food and original crafts. Plus, possibly the biggest variety of Christmas mugs I’ve seen in one city!

One thing to remember: the markets are CRAZY on Saturday nights! Don’t the let the crowds surprise you.

Lights, camera, gluhwein!

Our small town’s markets has a soft opening this week - the bar & restaurant booths opened up!

The rest of the town decorations and booths (called casette, or little houses, in Italian) go up this week for a bigger kickoff next weekend.

Highly recommend Christmas markets in Italy - the food is INSANE! And we still have gluhwein too, although it’s called vin brulee in my area.

London with mom!

We had a blast. We did a a bunch classic first time spots, a bunch I hadn’t seen since 2011! And she graciously let me drag her to all the random spots I always want to explore.

Some highlights:
- Introducing mom to the joys of fish & chips and steak & ale pie
- Hunting down the Christmas decorations as they set up
- Trying Malaysian food - 10/10 would recommend
- Visiting a castle is always a good idea
- Day tripping to Oxford
- A surprise parade and seeing the king!

Krakow was a dream! From wandering the historic streets to eating my weight in pierogi, it makes for a fantastic getaway.

A few of my favorites:
- A walking tour is a must! There’s so much history to Krakow that most us have never heard. I did one with @guruwalk and Chris was a fantastic guide, full of fascinating history and funny stories.
- St. Mary’s Basilica was gorgeous. And this comes from someone who lives in Italy and sees stunning cathedrals all the time!
- Eat as many pierogi as possible. I had great ones at @goscinnachata and @kuchnia_u_babci_maliny.
- Take a day trip to Auschwitz. It’s less than two hours from Krakow and such an important site to visit.
If you can, go during fall. The whole city is full of trees showing off their colors, and it’s some of the best foliage I’ve seen in Europe!

I don’t think I can put into words the significance of seeing Auschwitz.

To see, firsthand, this place.

To walk the paths of the camps where 1.1 million people died.

As we walked in the cold rain that went on for hours, I couldn’t help but think about the people who had no coats and barely shoes. To work, 14 hours a day. To live on 700 calories a day.

Please if you head to Poland, visit Auschwitz. It’s so necessary to remember.
