Tomorrow is a national holiday in Italy, Epiphany. But tonight, northeastern Italy has a unique way to celebrate the end of the year.

Most towns have a massive bonfire tonight and top it with a stuffed witch. It represents the previous year, and burning it makes room for good luck in the next year.

We eat pinza (a sweet bread made especially for this night) and drink wine or tea. It's one of the best times of the year to see the whole town come together!

Sadly, this is the second year we can’t celebrate pan e vin because of restrictions. Here’s to next year’s bonfire being a truly massive affair to clear all this out!

I suspect that this winter, we all could use a bit more of that. We're tired, all of us, and need time to recharge.

It's a strange balance between resting and taking care of ourselves, right? I went and properly worked out today, and I feel better than I have in WEEKS. But before going, it took every ounce of my self-control to drag myself out the door.

I feel like some people jump back in, recharged and raring to go. Others (read: me) feel like too much of last year is following into this one.

After a crazy past few months, I’m focused on catching up on my travel guides - there are so many in the works for you! - and general life things that have slipped.

So instead of my top nine or a highlight reel, let’s talk! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There was so much good: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We had an epic trip to Sicily! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have so many more nieces and nephews (both blood and friend-kids) than I did last year, and they are all cute and adorable and precious.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In spite of the ever-changing restrictions, I visited 6 countries and countless cities.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I got to visit my hometown for the first time in two years.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I still love living in Italy and will stay until they drag me out kicking and screaming.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I saw more of my mom than I have since I lived at home!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There was so much that was hard:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I lost my dad. That alone has made 2021 the hardest year yet.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We spent 4+ months in lockdown at the beginning of the year, and it’s feeling eerily like we’re headed there again.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Logan’s deployed and will be for months more.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We’re all exhausted. Regardless of what you think about C*V*D, we’re all tired. The trauma and the limitations and the loneliness has drained all of us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
